Fertility and Conception Consultations

Having worked in fertility counseling prior to her midwifery education, Alex is passionate about her work helping people build their families. This can include fertility charting support and assessment, nutritional and herbal consultation, as well as options counseling for all clients, including transgender individuals.

Inseminations

Alex provides timing and insemination support for clients attempting to become pregnant. For those clients who are doing intra-uterine inseminations (iui), Alex performs iui inseminations for heterosexual, lgbtqi, and single clients in the comfort of their own homes.

Childbirth Education Classes

Whether you are seeking a solo or group childbirth education class, Alex provides both individualized, home classes and group classes. Alex specializes in home birth-centered classes, as well in a fair amount of nerdiness (expect plenty of crochet and knitted visual aids).

Holistic Prenatal Care

Prenatal care includes a free initial consultation, monthly prenatal visits every four weeks until 28 weeks of pregnancy, twice monthly until 36 weeks, and weekly until your birth. Prenatal visits take place in your home, and last approximately an hour. They include clinical assessment, education, optional lab testing, discussions on the upcoming choices in your prenatal and birth, so that your can make informed choices throughout the process, discussion of your thoughts and feelings around your upcoming birth. A routine prenatal appointment includes clinical assessments, such as blood pressure, pulse, a urine dip, fundal height measurement (an assessment of how the uterus and your baby are growing during each phase of pregnancy), heart tones (listening to your baby's heart rate and rhythm), and fetal position, assessing how your baby is tucked in your abdomen and pelvis. Fiddlehead Midwifery offers all testing and screening options that are standard in pregnancy. Our clients make decisions that are right for their family about which testing options are right for them, and we work to make sure that our clients have all the information and support necessary to make informed choices about each testing option throughout their pregnancies.

Home Birth

Alex is on-call for your 24 hours a day and 7 days a week during your due window. She will be in touch with you via phone as labor commences, and you will decide together when she should transition to your home. Fiddlehead Midwifery offers labor support and skilled hands during your labor and birth. Alex will come to your home, assess labor progress, client and fetal well-being monitoring, including heart tone assessment and vitals, as well as provide input if appropriate- including position changes, emotional support, assessing energy level, nutrition and hydration. Alex will provide gentle, evidence-based care and support as you birth your baby, and is trained in newborn assessment, and emergency management, as well routine immediate postpartum care. In uncomplicated births families are supported so that everyone has the opportunity to meet (on land) undisturbed and in the comfort of their own home. In the immediate postpartum we monitor both parent and baby, do a complete newborn exam, make sure everyone in the family is stable, fed, and free to focus on each other. We leave your home in the hours after birth with you fed and tucked into bed with a clean, cozy house, and a plan to visit the next day for a postpartum appointment.

Postpartum Care

Fiddlehead Midwifery will provide primary postpartum care for you and your baby in the first six to eight weeks after your birth. Alex will visit your home at 1 day, 3 days, 1-2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6-8 weeks postpartum, with additional visits as needed. These visits include physical assessments of you and your baby, weight checks for your newborn, and breastfeeding support, including assessment of latch, positional support, and additional resources as needed or desired. During the first week after your birth we complete all the paperwork for your baby's birth certificate, and perform all appropriate lab work. Alex will also support your family's adjustment process and assist you in having the social support and community resources you need during this time of transition.

Placenta Therapy

There are many options for what they choose to do with their placenta after birth. Fiddlehead Midwifery can help your family explore those options, including lotus birth, placenta burial, placenta tincture or encapsulation, placenta prints on watercolor paper, or simply having your midwife dispose of your placenta according to OSHA guidelines. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

Nutritional and Herbal Counseling

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." - Hippocrates

Throughout the childbearing year your body nourishes your baby, and having support in your own nourishment can be an important part of your care. A whole foods diet can be the foundation of a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period, and nutritive herbs can support you throughout your care. Alex has experience working with clients with many different body types, as well as individuals with disordered eating histories.
